So How Urgent is "Urgent"?

MacLean's magazine is reporting that out of the $128.8 million that was raised to match the "eligible" donations to CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) not ONE CENT has actually gone to Haiti yet. Despite the "urgent need" there, apparently it's not urgent enough.

Let me guess: they've created a committee to study hiring a consultant who will create a committee to decide how best to hire a consultant who will decide how to spend the money?

Let me save you tens of millions of dollars, Harper: food, demolition equipment, building supplies, medical supplies. Hell, PAY some Canadian medical personnel to get their butts down there and actually HELP some of these people.

Or is that too much to ask?

  1. That is absolute CRAP! They need that money! One of my colleagues just got back from nursing in Haiti and from his stories the devastation is even worse than it seems in pictures and news stories. Right now, if you're not in the big city, you are completely fucked. And once the rainy season starts the death toll is going to be astronomical. Harper needs to get his head on straight and get that money to the people that need it!

  2. Hopefully the Macleans article will be damning enough that they will finally have to get action. It's just disgusting that any aid organization is that disorganized that they can't figure out what's needed. Even if some of the $ was being set aside for infrastructure rebuilding, there is NO reason that immediate aid could have been sent. What's the point of rebuilding if there's no one to rebuild for?
